Criterion H (draft)
To carry out this project. I must learn, first how to create a website, preferably one that is inviting and student friendly. I am choosing to do a website about my school because it is a small school with a small about of students. This website will serve he purpose of attracting more students. That is why this website will be aimed towards the students and not the parents, only to convince the student to consider this school. I will create a website that includes videos and exclusive interviews by and for students to attract a larger population of students to attend this school. It will help them consider this school as a potential candidate in pursuing their IB education. The client is the schools' administration and the end users will be a potential
student(s).
Posted by Muna at 11:50 AM 0 comments
Criterion G
The school does not receive substantial amounts of new students every year.
This school offers IB education which is hard to find, especially in a private, faith-based Islamic school. Students are hesitant about joining faith-based schools at times because of concerns over not receiving top-notch education. There is no readily available information to aid decision making when transferring to a new school, especially to a school that you may not know much about. The only option for readily available information is the school website that offers information aimed solely towards parents and not so much students. If this shortcoming is fixed, the school will receive a higher revenue of students each year, because the decision to attend a school relies not only on the input of the parent but on the student’s input as well.
If there is a source of readily available information for students such as a website or brochure the decision making process for a student would become easier when they have access to a form of propaganda aimed towards potential students. The school administration has tried to target more students with student friendly benefits offered at the school, but the decision to attend the school should be facilitated with a basis in assisting the student in their decision to attend a school.

Review Questions Page 60 #'s 3 -10
1. The computer may read 123.4 as an ASCII code. Today's computers work for more than characters. A group of bits can also represent colors , sounds, quantitative measurements or any information that needs to be processed.
2. COmputers are built from switching devices that reduce all information to 0's and 1's, they represent numbers using the binary number system . It is used becuase it has clear, consistent rukes for every arithmetic operation.
3 Not all software is compatible with all CPU's, software written for one processor would not always work for another. Every processor has a built-in instruction set, if CPU's are not i the same product family it would not be able to execute comands from a different family, make or model of a different company. Power PC processors used in Macs have a different instruction set from INtel CPU's.
4. Another way oof determining a CPU's processing speed is the CPU's word size, The number of buts a CPU's can process atr one time.
5. It is important becuase it should be easy to add peripherals to your computer so the CPU can communicate with the outside world of other networks and store information for later use. They allow computers to be linked to other machines. The input and output peripherals are connected by the buses, slots and ports that are connected to the memory.
Expansion slots can be used inside the computers housing or outside for attached deviceso.
6.To prevent the computers from overheating, manufacturers have begn to offermilticore processors-putting multiple CPU's in a single chip.
7. RAM random access mempry that can be changed by the user.
ROM: Read-only memory is already engrraved into the computer and is still there after the computer is turned off and cannot be changed.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting
Advantages: Telecommuting benefits the enviornment by reducing the number of cars on the freeway by allowing people to transfer information from home.It saves energy and reduces pollution and accidents.
It is more productive for the worker, it saves time and allows the worker to finish ear;y without communting to and from home which allows time for personal recreation.
It allows for a more flexible schedule and reduces wasted time and distraction.
Disadvantages: Sometimes jobs require instant communication with coworkers to prevent confusion. Working at home requires self-discipline and instead of benefiting the worker can be a distraction with temptations such as sleep or television. Kids and food are also distractions when working from home.
Social and Ethical issues relating to Telecommuting: EQUALITY OF ACCESS: SOme workers are not able to telecommute becuase of unavailable resources and materials that are crusial to the job and therefore must work where there are recources.
POLICIES AND STANDARDS: When working at home workers must be trusted to use the computer and other technology in the appropriate way and floow policies and standards given to them at work as well as at home.

4. People who work in electronic sweatshops are at risk for being replaced by computers. This is a dilemma any time thousands of jobs can be lost becuase it is so easy to be replaced with the caplabblity of technology growing. Society can also worry about other jobs like factory workers being replaced by technology and computers.
6. To some extant childrens' minds are very dependent on computers. Balance is good. SAtudents should develope tchnological skills as well as knowing how to multiply and divide successfully without using the computer/ calculator.
11.In my past education involving computers, I have taken a technoology course every year sice elementary school. I am up to date with technological advances and measure up well.
12. home computers do strengthen families anf friends by connecting people using social networks and email. it allows all families to connect with people in far off distances .
13.People are able to be creative using the computer, in response to hands-on creativity, computers and technology may limit creativity if not used in the right way.

4. For the worker telecommuting is very practical and saves hours of being caught up in traffic. Workers can choose to use their own computers or being connected to the company's modem. Telecommuters refers to all home information users. For workers and management this is a great advantage but can be hard if there are issues that would better be handled face-to-face.
Telecommuting also helps society because it reduces the nu,ber of cars on the freeway.
For the worker it saves time and offers more productivity for the management.
5.Technology such as computers and fax machines allow workers in the workplace to perform tasks more effciently and have a high productivity rate. They help you communicate by sending important informaation to other places as well as create powerpoints and spreadsheets.
6. De-skilling refers to automated jobs that require a lesser amount of skill. Like computerized cash registers where computers do all the work.
Up-skilling refers to clerical jobs that have become improved by technology, such as the use of spreadsheets, databases, email and internet.
7. People who work in electronic sweatshops spend hours staring at a computer screen, producing things that many people use and who work for low wages. Offshore outsourcing is an example of globalization.
8. Education id critical in our future, especially computer education. More jobs now involve technology and computers and people who know how to run computewrs.
9.In the industrial age like today students were taught basic skills to live and function in the "real world". It taught students countless numbers of facts that must be memorized and students had to sit quietly in rows and to work individually. Schools have changed, now students are expected to learntechnological skills and culture and communication in fun and entertaining atmouspheres.
10. To function in the information age students are required to learn mathematics, literacy, technological familiarty, culture, communcation and learning skills.
11. Education simulation games help children learn through exploration and invention, rather than listening to a lecture in class. They allow students to explore artificial enviornments that assist with their learning and focus on vital concepts. With computer aided instuction, it focuses on more traditional learning techniques and offers many advantages over workbook.
12. Multimedia can be used by teachers and students in many ways. They can use computers to give presentations when giving a lesson or presenting a presentation. Videos can be watched in class as well. Students can examine art together on a computer.
13. Distance education is very helpful in a classroom. It can allow you to interact with other classrooms or work on a project without having to leave the classroom. it is very convenient for calssrooms that do not have a lot of recources.
14.Some may say CAI programs or limits students, even with all of its benefits. To ensure success students must put to use and practice their skills.
15. People use home computers for reasons such as telecommuting to work and working from home, sending emails, news, or onlne banking.
16. Smart cards are not as common in the US as they are in Europe. They function like a credit card but hold memory. They are slipped into a special slot in the computer and displays data. They can be used as meal tickes, drivers' licenses, or ca record transactions.
17. Home entertainment is changing rapidly, soon we will be able to interact with our favorite game shows or change the camera angles on tv shows or movies.

1- TechReflect: Imagine you were asleep for a thousand years and suddenly woke up in this technological age. What are some things that can help you get up-to-date with using technology?
If I we re to wake up after 1000 years of sleep into a world of technology I would be shocked at first and dumbfounded, not being used to this foriegn enviornment. Some things that would help get up to date with technology would be the help of someone to explain it to me. I would buy an intructional DVD explaining the technology concept. I would learn how to manage a telivision set and purchase DVD's explaining the function of computers and telepones. After a while of being comfortable I would buy some sort of technology and start implementing it in my daily life.
What inspired Alan Kay? What did he accomplish?
Alan Key says 'The best way to predict the future is to invent it'
Kay was inspired by the need to create a better, more technologically advanced future. He works to make learning entertaining for children, having invented the first paint program and artificial computer enviornments.
Some of Kay's accomplishments include helping to create the first personal computer by apple, having already been rejected. He created interactive computing and lead a team of researchers at Xerox, Palo Alto Research Center in California. He works tp help people better understand complex computing systems and in 2004 was awarded the Kyoto Prize by the Inamori Foundation in Japan.

Do you think educational games are good ways for students to learn in schools? Give examples that support your arguments.
Educational games are effective ways to learn in school. Hard concepts can be substituted with easier more relatable things to help students better understand a hard lesson. For example, Leapfrog learning software helps kids learn how to read, write and do math. NOw technology is advancing and these games can now be played as video games that are able to be connected to your TV to enlarge a game. Students are learning but remain entertained.
"Draw Play" from stout play allows students to engage in a fun game that can help learn problem solving skills or drawing.

How easy/difficult is it to use RSS?
RSS is very easy to use conisdering it is named"Really Simple Syndication" It is used to subscribe to new posts that might be updated frequently and instead of automatically returing to the blog to check for new posts, by clicking the RSS button(posted below) new posts are automatically sent to you.
Find 2 online applications that display feeds. How difficult is it to use RSS (can a clue-less web browser figure out how to use it)?
Two online applications that use RSS would be new youtube videos from a specific user. New videos are sent to your email.
Blogger: Subscribers who click RSS automatically recieve new posts.
RSS is not difficult. With the click of little orange button, a clueless internet user will recieve new posts.

Some technology that I think would be useful at our school would be internet access in classrooms as well as dish or sattelite to watch important events. Laptops in classrooms are also useful to take notes on or to research thin gs in class. LEcture podcasts are useful if you miss a class. Online teaching sessions are popular with online schools if you have any questions live chats are available. A student broadcasting club is also needed.

10/1
Direct Connection offers full advantage of internet services without dialing. It allows you to transfer files stored on your computer. It is faster and transfers files quickly. It can transmit information, voice and video effectively.
Dial-up Connection does not offer direct access to the internet and requires a user to dial-up a connection, which is slower and less effective than direct. The computer must be connected to a modem and phone line and is temporary internet access.
Modern connection methods are called Broadband Connections and are not temporary. Users are not required to dial in.
DSL(Digital Subscriber Line) are available for small businesses and homes and is much faster than modem.
TV companies offer cabel modems. This is not available everywhere. But can be shared by homes resulting in a decreasing speed and connection.
Satellite Internet connections are available through satellite dishes which is one of the fastest.
Then there is Wireless Broadband which is available to portable computers and can be taken anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection.
Area of Impact
Education pertaining to 1.7 and 1.1(Equality of Access and Reliability.)
Equality of Access:Depending on what internet connections are available, different education options like websites or online schools are offered. Many people, including US citizens to dot have access to internet connection and people who face the digital divide as well , do not have online education opportunities because of an unavailable website or bad internet connection-access to the internet is not always available.
Reliability: Internet connections as well as the internet are always reliable. Websites that include some educational facts are not always authentic or reliable. SOme may pose false information that can misinform. One must always check if websites are reliable for information.
Internet connections can also prove unreliable when it comes to a strong or weak connection and can become weak ir disconnected very quickly.
Area of Impact
Business and Employment
Globalization and Cultural Diversity:
Business opportunities are often posted online and people from around the world can access them Globalization and Cultural Diversity contributes to Business and employment opportunities .

Describe several ways computers play a critical role in modern life.
The computer is now a household item. Without them the world would not be connected and face the digital divide. It also plays a large role for student life, and enables students to search and resaurch new topics for school and is a excellent tool for social networking.Discuss the circumstances and ideas that led to the development of the modern computer.
The computer was pushed forward in invention by events such as World War II and the space race. When the us was competing or fighting other natiuons and required technology for an advantage.Describe several trends in the evolution of modern computers.
Computers were originally used for calculating, at first the concept of the computer was rejected many times even by IBM. They were bulky, big and slow. Now the smaller they are the faster. Still these supercomputers are used for timesharing.Outline the five major types of computers in use today and describe their principal uses.
Supercomputers: Supercomputers are used for business transactions or at the bank as well as timesharing.
Laptops: Laptops are portable computers that have simple funtions and applications for everyday use.Desktop computers: Desktop computers are usually found at home and have simple applications.
PDA: This portable device preforms the tasks of everyday business life and can be held inside a pocket.
Describe how the explosive growth of the Internet is changing the way people use computers and information technology.
Now the computers are mainly used for internet for researching, communicating or liesure. A computer without internet in popular opinion is useless. Before computers were used soley for calculating, now they are used for research and communication.
Explain how today’s information age differs from other times in history and prehistory.
Today's information is available by the click of a mouse, before people were required to search for information on thier own. Also much of the information that is around today was not yet available or discovered. Todays inforamtion age is more advanced, as is more used than the traditional researching through books
Discuss the social and ethical impact of information technology on our society.
Technology does place the society at an advantage becuase it makes researching and communicating easier, although it does not promote "healthy" habits. Many people spend more time with a computer than actually researching topics from books. The society has to adapt to the technology age.

Now this may seem like an everyday action, but how was it when this was first starting out?
1984--using the internet and computer technology, college students can register and enroll in courses by the click of a mouse.
"The student, Robert D. Cugini, 27 years old, registered for an English Composition course last month by pushing a button on a computer in his home in Astoria, Queens."

Computerphobia is caused by fear of a computer-dominated society. the Marriam Webster dictionary defines a computerphobic as: a person who experiences anxiety about computers and especially about their use.
To handle computerphobia one should be well aquainted with the computer and learn it is not as powerful as he or she should think.
The coputer application I think that is most helpful to the world would be microsoft word or internet explorer. They help the world and connect different netwworks together.

Whither the Rennaissance Man?
The author suggest to invest in knowledge that won't wear out. In today's day and age technology as well as the internet are becoming more of our daily lives, but will this age stick around or is it just another fashion that will go away, the author suggests we must invest of useful, everlasting knowledge that can be shared amoungst people and has the potential to be repeated and taught over. he quotes Benjamin Frankin, "When you're finished changing, you're finished."
Undergraduate studies are becoming less of an exploration and more of a routine, Hawley says. College admitance will be accompanied by tests interviews. When gaining knowledge is encouraged are these routines consticting and restricting the students' want to learn? to maek teh educational system more of an exploration, it is suggested further your knowledge into something you are interested it much LIke Benjamin Franklin.

What is the difference between a mainframe and a microcomputer?
A mainframe computer were computers used for difficult computing jobs. They are still used in banks and airlines. Today mainframe computers use mirocprocessors which makes them smaller and cheaper. The cost of a mainframe computer today is around a million US dollars. MAinframe computers are used for business transactions and can communicate with several users simultaneously, using timesharing.
A microcomputer or PC, personal computer is created only to have one user at a time. It enhances productivity. PC's can be laptops, desktop computers, or workstations. It uses a microprocessor as its central prossessing unit, and is smaller than a mainframe computer.

TechReflect 9/2
Some events before the twentieth century that influneced the development of the computer were the world wars and the Space Race.
The govenment and armies would constantly try to spy on opposing armies using computer codes and calculations. The British government hired a team of code-crackers to crack Nazi codes. They developed a special-purpose-computer to help eavesdrop on Nazi armies. The US alsso developed the ELectronic Numerical Integrator and Computer(ENIAC) to help the US armybut was not finished until two months after the war; this computer broke down every 7 minutes but could calculate 500 times faster than then existing calculators. This convinced companies that the advancement of computers was possible.
The 50-60's Space Race also contributed to the advancement of the computer. As The US was competing with Russia, new technology and computers were needed to help keep up to date data inorder catch up with Russia which had already launched the Sputnik in 1957.The automobile and the television set are two examples of technological
inventions that changed our society drastically in ways that were not
anticipated by their inventors. Outline several positive and negative effects of
each of these two inventions. Do you think, on balance, that we are better off
as a result of these machines? Why or why not? Now repeat this exercise for the
computer.
There are some disadvantages that come along with the invention of automobiles and telivision sets but there are more good than bad.
Disadvantages of the Automobile include: the polution of the enviornment and a depleting Ozone layer, there are more accidents every year beacuase of cars.
Advantages include: Speedy transportation from destinations.
It is more comfortable than if we were to still travel by animal and also more effective.
Cars have made it able to reach our destinations faster.
The telivision has become part of our daily lives and are associated with many disadvantages as well.
Disadvantages of the telivision include: innapropriate programs for children
TV addiction is also growing!
ADvantages: WE are often updated on news and global issues
The Tv is also a form of entertainment for when we are bored.
The Computer has also become a household item.
Disadvantages are similar to those of a Tv: they include, computer addiction, online security issues and innapropriate websites.
Advantages include: Communicataion and social networking websites to keep intouch with friends and family, email also helps in communicating.
The internet updates us on news and current events and also is a form of entertainment, it is used or playing online games or watching videos.
These 3 inventions make our lives easier even though they are assiociated with disadvantages. We look beyond these disadvantages since these inventions connect our world globally and make our daily lives easier and are an advancement from past civilizations.

ITGS textbook notes, page 6/7
1. page 6, paragraph 2: "A 'computer' was a person who performed calculations. These human computers labored for many hours to produce mathematical tables. Unfortunately, to err is human, and the tables they produced were riddled with mistakes."

Tech Reflect
I think computers and technology are very useful and people in this era cannot function without them. Without them we would not be able to research for school or communicate with outher people areound the world.
The world simply cannot function without technology whether it be a telivision for news or entertainment or an oven for cooking. The world we live in is held together by technology.
Unfortunatly the computer has become part of our daily lives, so much so that we spend more time with the computer or other technology like cell phones than with actual people. It can become addicting and holds risks if your not too careful about who you talk to or "meet" on it.

PA SYStem
Section 2 : System in a social context
The PA system affects the school by spreading important announcements throughout the school and can inform or educate the school community at large, at the same time.
Section1: The isses that are raised from the PA system is there can be complications with it if it does not work in some areas or cannot be clear. This system is responsible for relaying important announcements and without it the community can be misinformed or the news can take longer to relay.
Section 3: Education

IT Systems: Security
Security is a large concern when it comes to systems such as 'facebook',' twitter', aim, yahoo or 'myspace'. These systems come with settings so that a profile, which is complete with information or pictures on a user can be set as private to non-friended users. These systems have the option of maintaining a public or private profile if one is concerned about security. For example a user can choose to hide their "tweets".
Although these systems are made for communication with other users, they are created with security in mind to maintain confidentiality.
Security settings are used to regulate the availability of information to the public community and ensures that information is accessible only to those who have authorized access. system security settings ensure that the private information and communication of users are private when requested.
Although some faulty security systems do pose some risk for users with a public profile, new security systems provide protection accounts from unauthorized access to a profile. Proper security systems protect profiles on networks such as facebook or twitter and prevent altercation or entry and restrict access to machines. The reliability of security systems allow users to place confidence in new systems and programs.

policies and Standards:Death Star
POlicies consist or rules governing access to, or use of, information, hardware, information and software. The death star is capable of destroying any planet and must have policies for those who have access to and atr governing it. Policies for the death star would need to define what is constitutional and unconstitutional access to it. The Death Star pulls in spaceships and identifies who has access to it and its polices. Polices promote or constrict access and must be present when people are using it and deciding to use it with all of its ability.
The standards govern the design and use of the death star and all of its uses.
The death stars ability makes it easier to destroy planets and maximizes human ability to destroy and is very effective in its dedsign. iT also makes their jobs more easy and effective, although its purose is not appropiate and another alternative should be found becuase it is a social issue.
