1- define biometrics.
A method of identifing individuals based on biological properties. The Technology scas a body part to match the scanned information previously stored in the sytem.
2- list and explain a use of a biometrics system in each area of impact.
fingerprinting : Health
Retina Scan: Health
DNa: matching:Health
Voice regonition:Business and employment
Avaition:science and enviornment
3- explain how one type of biometric system works.
Biometics in Financial institutions: Biometirc identification for emplyees or costumers; like Irisscanning technology to moniter employee access
Biometrics at Disneyland:used to identify seaon pass holders
4- who approves/disapproves of the use of biometrics?
approves: banks, industries, healthcare providers and business
disapprove:consumers who do not have a lot of knowledge of biometircs
5- explain 3 concerns regarding the use of the biometrics system.
Governemnt misuse of information
Suspicision in banks and healthcare providors.
Thieves may find a way around biometics
6- explain 3 advantages to using the biometrics system.
Accuracy :more accurate measures in employee needs, Security:ensures access to specific costumers and emplyees, convenience:reduces costumer wait time

5. Cathode-ray tube(CRT) moniters are more television style as opposed to LCD _liquid crystal displays. LCD's are more common, but CRTproduce high-quality images, and have been u sed longer.
6. Laptop moniters are LCD and CRT would be impractical because they alre usally older, bulkier models. Video projectors also use LCD to project computer screen to large audiences.

Social issues associated with this IT development: Many people have to learn how to use QWERTY keyboards using tutorials and it may not be that efficient or productive when first learning how to use it. The article describes this as HUNT-and-PECK.

12/23 Reading Review
List five input devices and three output devices that might be attached to a PC. Describe a typical use for each.
Input devices: Keyboard: Allows a user to type text and sends signals to the computer throogh a cable
Mouse: A mouse allows you to position the cursor on the mopnitor to perform commands
Scanner: A scanner allows you to scan a picture into the computer, and creates a digital picture of it
Smart Whiteboard: is a board full of information stored as a digital image on the computer's disk. Also available with handwriting recognition .
Joystick: A shift-like device that's a favorite controller for arcade-style games.
Output Devices: A monitor: Allows a user to view the computer, internet, documents
Printer: Prints documents and digital pictures
Speakers: Convert analog signal into sound
Projector: A projector converts the monitor image to create a large picture
Soundcard: enables the PC to accept microphone input, play music and other sound through speakers.
- Name and describe three special-purpose input devices people commonly use in public places, such as stores, banks, and libraries.
Drum Scanners: larger and more expensive than other scanners, used in publishing applications were image quality is critical
BArcode readers used in stores to read universal product codes (UPC's)
Optical mark readers: USed to capture the location of pencil marks on standardized tests.
Touch screen: responds to differnt touch recognition usually used in public liabraries airports, and shopping malls.
- Many people find that the mouse is impractical for use as a pointing device on a laptop computer. Describe at least three alternatives that are more appropriate.
Pointing stick: Or the Trackpoint, tiny handle in the center of the board that would respond to finger pressure
Stylus: performs point and click functions, usually on handheld devices
Touch screen: responds to when a user touches difernt screen recognition
Touchpad(trackpad) _ a small flat panel that's sensitive to light pressure.

Criterion H (draft)
To carry out this project. I must learn, first how to create a website, preferably one that is inviting and student friendly. I am choosing to do a website about my school because it is a small school with a small about of students. This website will serve he purpose of attracting more students. That is why this website will be aimed towards the students and not the parents, only to convince the student to consider this school. I will create a website that includes videos and exclusive interviews by and for students to attract a larger population of students to attend this school. It will help them consider this school as a potential candidate in pursuing their IB education. The client is the schools' administration and the end users will be a potential
student(s).

Criterion G
The school does not receive substantial amounts of new students every year.
This school offers IB education which is hard to find, especially in a private, faith-based Islamic school. Students are hesitant about joining faith-based schools at times because of concerns over not receiving top-notch education. There is no readily available information to aid decision making when transferring to a new school, especially to a school that you may not know much about. The only option for readily available information is the school website that offers information aimed solely towards parents and not so much students. If this shortcoming is fixed, the school will receive a higher revenue of students each year, because the decision to attend a school relies not only on the input of the parent but on the student’s input as well.
If there is a source of readily available information for students such as a website or brochure the decision making process for a student would become easier when they have access to a form of propaganda aimed towards potential students. The school administration has tried to target more students with student friendly benefits offered at the school, but the decision to attend the school should be facilitated with a basis in assisting the student in their decision to attend a school.

Review Questions Page 60 #'s 3 -10
1. The computer may read 123.4 as an ASCII code. Today's computers work for more than characters. A group of bits can also represent colors , sounds, quantitative measurements or any information that needs to be processed.
2. COmputers are built from switching devices that reduce all information to 0's and 1's, they represent numbers using the binary number system . It is used becuase it has clear, consistent rukes for every arithmetic operation.
3 Not all software is compatible with all CPU's, software written for one processor would not always work for another. Every processor has a built-in instruction set, if CPU's are not i the same product family it would not be able to execute comands from a different family, make or model of a different company. Power PC processors used in Macs have a different instruction set from INtel CPU's.
4. Another way oof determining a CPU's processing speed is the CPU's word size, The number of buts a CPU's can process atr one time.
5. It is important becuase it should be easy to add peripherals to your computer so the CPU can communicate with the outside world of other networks and store information for later use. They allow computers to be linked to other machines. The input and output peripherals are connected by the buses, slots and ports that are connected to the memory.
Expansion slots can be used inside the computers housing or outside for attached deviceso.
6.To prevent the computers from overheating, manufacturers have begn to offermilticore processors-putting multiple CPU's in a single chip.
7. RAM random access mempry that can be changed by the user.
ROM: Read-only memory is already engrraved into the computer and is still there after the computer is turned off and cannot be changed.

-What are the four basic functions of a computer?
Recieve input, from outside. Process information, arithmetic or logical, produce output, store information
- What does CPU stand for?
Central Processing Unit
- Explain what a bit is.
The smallest unit of information a computer can process.
- Name two codes used to convert words, etc. into bits.
01101010-used to tell the computer to convert into two numbers or 01000001 into the letter A
- Why is informations stored in some kind of binary format in computers?
computers are built from switching devices that reduce all information to 0's and 1's.

Tech Reflect 12/1
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting
Advantages: Telecommuting benefits the enviornment by reducing the number of cars on the freeway by allowing people to transfer information from home.It saves energy and reduces pollution and accidents.
It is more productive for the worker, it saves time and allows the worker to finish ear;y without communting to and from home which allows time for personal recreation.
It allows for a more flexible schedule and reduces wasted time and distraction.
Disadvantages: Sometimes jobs require instant communication with coworkers to prevent confusion. Working at home requires self-discipline and instead of benefiting the worker can be a distraction with temptations such as sleep or television. Kids and food are also distractions when working from home.
Social and Ethical issues relating to Telecommuting: EQUALITY OF ACCESS: SOme workers are not able to telecommute becuase of unavailable resources and materials that are crusial to the job and therefore must work where there are recources.
POLICIES AND STANDARDS: When working at home workers must be trusted to use the computer and other technology in the appropriate way and floow policies and standards given to them at work as well as at home.
