Over 500 million people around the world use internet. It is hard to tell how many exactly or how big the ever-expanding internet is. There are over 20 million websites and counting. It grows everyday and would be impossible to determine the size. People are trying to determine its size and from the question emerged many companies working to find the answer.  "ClickZ, Cyberatlas.internet.com, Statmarket.com, Nielsen Ratings, Office of the CIA, Mediametrix.com, comScore.com, eMarketer.com, Serverwatch.com, Securityspace.com, and the Computer Industry Almanac. "  Paul Gil

TCP( Transmission Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol) play a vital role in the creation of the internet. TCP/IP were created to replace NCP(Network Control Protocol) it was unable to handle the traffic passing through the network. It has the ability to switch packets from computer systems on any network to another network, and transfer information throught  internet netowrks.
IP moves data between host computers.
TCO moves multiple packet data between internet applications.
The Internet and most home networks support TCP/IP as the "language" computers use to find and connect with each other.

Describe several ways computers play a critical role in modern life.
The computer is now a household item. Without them the world would not be connected and face the digital divide. It also plays a large role for student life, and enables students to search and resaurch new topics for school and is a excellent tool for social networking.

Discuss the circumstances and ideas that led to the development of the modern computer.
The computer was pushed forward in invention by events such as World War II and the space race. When the us was competing or fighting other natiuons and required technology for an advantage.

Describe several trends in the evolution of modern computers.
Computers were originally used for calculating, at first the concept of the computer was rejected many times even by IBM. They were bulky, big and slow. Now the smaller they are the faster. Still these supercomputers are used for timesharing.

Outline the five major types of computers in use today and describe their principal uses.
Supercomputers: Supercomputers are used for business transactions or at the bank as well as timesharing.
Laptops: Laptops are portable computers that have simple funtions and applications for everyday use.

Desktop computers: Desktop computers are usually found at home and have simple applications.

PDA: This portable device preforms the tasks of everyday business life and can be held inside a pocket.

Describe how the explosive growth of the Internet is changing the way people use computers and information technology.

Now the computers are mainly used for internet for researching, communicating or liesure. A computer without internet in popular opinion is useless. Before computers were used soley for calculating, now they are used for research and communication.

Explain how today’s information age differs from other times in history and prehistory.

Today's information is available by the click of a mouse, before people were required to search for information on thier own. Also much of the information that is around today was not yet available or discovered. Todays inforamtion age is more advanced, as is more used than the traditional researching through books

Discuss the social and ethical impact of information technology on our society.

Technology does place the society at an advantage becuase it makes researching and communicating easier, although it does not promote "healthy" habits. Many people spend more time with a computer than actually researching topics from books. The society has to adapt to the technology age.

Computer links students to colleges

Now this may seem like an everyday action, but how was it when this was first starting out?
1984--using the internet and computer technology, college students can register and enroll in courses by the click of a mouse.

"The student, Robert D. Cugini, 27 years old, registered for an English Composition course last month by pushing a button on a computer in his home in Astoria, Queens."

Computerphobia is caused by fear of a computer-dominated society. the Marriam Webster dictionary defines a computerphobic as: a person who experiences anxiety about computers and especially about their use.
To handle computerphobia one should be well aquainted with the computer and learn it is not as powerful as he or she should think.

The coputer application I think that is most helpful to the world would be microsoft word or internet explorer. They help the world and connect different netwworks together.

Whither the Rennaissance Man?

The author suggest to invest in knowledge that won't wear out. In today's day and age technology as well as the internet are becoming more of our daily lives, but will this age stick around or is it just another fashion that will go away, the author suggests we must invest of useful, everlasting knowledge that can be shared amoungst people and has the potential to be repeated and taught over. he quotes Benjamin Frankin, "When you're finished changing, you're finished."
Undergraduate studies are becoming less of an exploration and more of a routine, Hawley says. College admitance will be accompanied by tests interviews. When gaining knowledge is encouraged are these routines consticting and restricting the students' want to learn? to maek teh educational system more of an exploration, it is suggested further your knowledge into something you are interested it much LIke Benjamin Franklin.

What is the difference between a mainframe and a microcomputer?

A mainframe computer were computers used for difficult computing jobs. They are still used in banks and airlines. Today mainframe computers use mirocprocessors which makes them smaller and cheaper. The cost of a mainframe computer today is around a million US dollars. MAinframe computers are used for business transactions and can communicate with several users simultaneously, using timesharing.

A microcomputer or PC, personal computer is created only to have one user at a time. It enhances productivity. PC's can be laptops, desktop computers, or workstations. It uses a microprocessor as its central prossessing unit, and is smaller than a mainframe computer.

TechReflect 9/2

Some events before the twentieth century that influneced the development of the computer were the world wars and the Space Race.
The govenment and armies would constantly try to spy on opposing armies using computer codes and calculations. The British government hired a team of code-crackers to crack Nazi codes. They developed a special-purpose-computer to help eavesdrop on Nazi armies. The US alsso developed the ELectronic Numerical Integrator and Computer(ENIAC) to help the US armybut was not finished until two months after the war; this computer broke down every 7 minutes but could calculate 500 times faster than then existing calculators. This convinced companies that the advancement of computers was possible.
The 50-60's Space Race also contributed to the advancement of the computer. As The US was competing with Russia, new technology and computers were needed to help keep up to date data inorder catch up with Russia which had already launched the Sputnik in 1957.

The automobile and the television set are two examples of technological
inventions that changed our society drastically in ways that were not
anticipated by their inventors. Outline several positive and negative effects of
each of these two inventions. Do you think, on balance, that we are better off
as a result of these machines? Why or why not? Now repeat this exercise for the
computer.

There are some disadvantages that come along with the invention of automobiles and telivision sets but there are more good than bad.
Disadvantages of the Automobile include: the polution of the enviornment and a depleting Ozone layer, there are more accidents every year beacuase of cars.
Advantages include: Speedy transportation from destinations.
It is more comfortable than if we were to still travel by animal and also more effective.
Cars have made it able to reach our destinations faster.

The telivision has become part of our daily lives and are associated with many disadvantages as well.
Disadvantages of the telivision include: innapropriate programs for children
TV addiction is also growing!

ADvantages: WE are often updated on news and global issues
The Tv is also a form of entertainment for when we are bored.

The Computer has also become a household item.
Disadvantages are similar to those of a Tv: they include, computer addiction, online security issues and innapropriate websites.
Advantages include: Communicataion and social networking websites to keep intouch with friends and family, email also helps in communicating.
The internet updates us on news and current events and also is a form of entertainment, it is used or playing online games or watching videos.

These 3 inventions make our lives easier even though they are assiociated with disadvantages. We look beyond these disadvantages since these inventions connect our world globally and make our daily lives easier and are an advancement from past civilizations.
